Discussion 8: Final Presentations Shout Out!

I’ve been looking at my fellow students’ presentations and this segment has a lot of various options.  As my “ah ha” moment was the time consuming of making a personal videos consisting of homemade videos and pictures.  However, when looking at some of the text-to-talk apps that might be an excellent way to incorporate student producing their own video without demanding too much class time.

Assignment 9: TPACK Evolutions (part 1)

My new Venn diagram:

Venn Untitled

Describe:

This model is more similar to the TPACK model below than my original Venn diagram displayed at the bottom of this post. I stated that I am semi competent in Technological Knowledge as of right now, as there is so much out there for me to learn to feel that I am completely proficient. However, I feel a lot more experienced now than what I did in the beginning of this class.

This is the ideal TPACK model teachers want to strive to be close to.

PBL:

I was a little hesitant utilizing PBL for Health Education on the more personal units. I still stand by that, as I can see there might be an issue with collaboration and presenting emotional and personal topics such as mental health issues, drawing personal boundaries, and positive versus negative role models as they might vary widely between the students. However, I think utilizing PBL will be perfect for examining body structure, organs, body functions, studying various diseases including STDs, and bullying.

Discussion 7: Creation & Editing Tools, Part 2 – Digital Storytelling

  1. When utilizing iMovie, or any other movie-making app, students will create their own digital story. To produce a digital story they will have to gather information and images, and film their own ideas to generate their very own story.   This will apply to the higher level of Blooms taxonomy.
  1. My “ah ha” moment was how much time it could take to make a movie when combining a ton of various images form different sources. This is definitely something to keep in mind when assigning this kind of work.
  1. An additional tool for my students to make short videos is Cute CUT.  It is compatible for Mac, iPhones, and iPad. Here you can easily add on self-draw to the videos as well.

Assignment 8: Creation & Editing Tools -Digital Storytelling w/ iMovie

By being involved in the creation of digital storytelling students are able to express themselves in a different manner than traditional writing. Some students may watch a lot of movies and feel more confident in expressing themselves through digital storytelling rather than writing. To produce a digital story about a topic within health education for example, students will have to do research and use creativity to produce a movie. Learning effective collaboration is also an important benefit when creating digital storytelling projects with other students.

I have utilized iMovie on my mac producing a video of a wonderful event our family recently experienced. On November 22nd Greg and I participated in Tour de Tucson, a 104-mile bike ride. I was able to make a video displaying what the ride was all about for us, and the support we felt within the Type 1 Diabetes community. By incorporating both short videos and pictures I was able to tell a story emphasizing the value we gained from our involvement in Tour de Tucson. The feeling of accomplishment of being able to produce a video was for me pretty amazing, and I am sure that other students will be surprised at what they can do.

Digital storytelling can easily be incorporated in ELA focusing on imagination and story building. However, I can also see how one can utilize digital storytelling in Health Education. For example, students can make an awareness campaign for smoking prevention, birth control, teen pregnancy, or various diseases. As mentioned in class, it is important to let student choose their own topic to encourage participation. Therefore doing this project at the end of the semester and letting the student use any subject matter from the entire semester might be a good idea.

World Cup in Roller Derby

ROLLER DERBY WORLD CUP was happening in Dallas, Texas this weekend.

And I was playing for Team Norway

I had a wonderful time, we learned a lot, and Team Norway got on 16th place out of 32 teams.  That means we are in the top half of the world!!!

It was a FUN and hard fought weekend.

Here is a VIDEO from our game agains Team USA.  We lost tremendously(!) 854-6 to be exact.  However, we are extremely proud of those 6 points.  Here I was passed the jammer penny and actually made it out of the pack.  Though no points were scored in this video, it’s a huge deal just to get out of the pack against Team USA.

Reflective Reading #5: Digital Storytelling

Always a Family

Story Corps is a non-profit organization making recordings and animated stories of personal conversations. First, let me say that I listened to many of the stories and they pretty much all made me cry. They are very emotionally loaded, as people are talking about where they first met, war veterans talking about their experiences overseas, or family secrets being revealed.

The story I choose to write about is Always a Family. This story is about the phone call Monique got from her ex-husband, Michael, on September 11th, calling to say goodbye. He was in the 103rd floor of the World Trade Center.

The story is heart breaking, as we all know how this will end. Though they were divorced there is no doubt in my mind they were a wonderful loving family. They had two kids together and Michael wants Monique to tell them that he loves them.

The visuals make the story seem more real. Though it is a cartoon the images of the family together makes the story even more touching. The audio, which is the heart of the story, is a monologue of the surviving ex-wife and mom. I believe it is the combination of audio AND the cartoon images that makes all of these stories so moving.

Happy Diabetes Day!

It is National Diabetes Day and I’m feeling a little torn….

We are wearing blue, we are posting pictures on social media, and we are planning get togethers with friends and families also living with Type 1, celebrating with ice cream, on my daughter’s request.

Why are we CELEBRATING a disease?

blue for nov 14

I am celebrating the Diabetes COMMUNITY, the CONNECTION, and the AWARENESS we are making on this day.

The FRIENDS I have made, the FRIENDS my daughter has made. This thing certainly would have been a lot harder to tackle was it not for all of them.

THANK YOU!

I am also secretly CELEBRATING a CURE! Though there is none [yet] we are closer to a CURE today than we were last year!

So HAPPY DIABETES DAY, Everybody!

I love someone with T1D

ZooBurst is Hilarious!!

Here is my experiment attempting to make a Diabetes Awareness 3D Pop Up book with ZooBurds.

I had so much FUN!

I’m debating on making a digital Christmas card with an app like this… Ha ha.

Discussion #5: Creation & Editing Tools –Book Creating Tools

The level of skills the students will develop from this lesson plan will be to construct a product to share with others. By designing something together, though working individually, the final product will display their collaborative newfound knowledge. The booklet will inspire the students to communicate with family members about what they have learned as well.

I had this idea that it would be perfect for my students to actually make an informational booklet to print and bring home during the month of November for Diabetes Awareness month. However, I experienced some issues….  Not many of the fancy apps were designed to print easily (and inexpensive)…. Maybe I was just a little too set in my ways…

Another story making application I came across is Book Creator, which seems very similar to Create Booklet I used, just not free.  To cover some of the other groups within Creation & Editing Tools one can utilize various text-to-video apps where the students generate their own cartoon-based videos, such as the video I’ve previously shared HERE. (The third video).

Another very interesting application is ZooBurst where one can make digital 3D pop-up books! In this app one can upload your own images or choose from their library.  Being able to upload your own images makes it much more relevant for health education, rather than many of the book creating apps where one can only utilize their pictures.

Here is a short tutorial on ZooBurst:
